Patio Design and Installation

Creating the Perfect Patio for Your Home

Patios are a great way to add value to your home as well as provide a beautiful outdoor area for relaxing and entertaining. They are a great way to utilize yard space where it’s difficult to grow grass or the soil content just isn’t viable for plantings.  Whether you’re looking to create a tranquil outdoor space for entertaining or an extension of your home, designing and installing a patio may be just what you need. But where do you start and how do you get the end results you desire? Let’s look at the steps needed to create the perfect patio for your home.

The Design Process

The very first step in the design process is choosing where to build your patio. Begin by deciding on the size and shape of your patio that best suits your needs. Consider how much space you have available and what job the patio needs to do – do you need a low stone wall that doubles as seating? What shape will best accommodate your furniture layout? Will a permanent fire pit be included, and if so, how will that affect the flow of the space? If you’re planning to entertain, consider adding more square footage. So often, we hear that our clients wish they had just a few more feet this way or that. You should also consider the types of materials you would like to use in your patio design, such as concrete pavers, brick pavers, flagstone, gravel or even artificial grass. The material you choose will depend on factors such as climate and budget, but also remember to consider aesthetics, as this will influence the overall look of your patio when completed.

Installation Process

Once you’ve chosen the design and materials for your patio, it’s time to prepare for installation. This process will vary, depending on the placement of your space, as well as the type of material chosen. There are occasions when existing plantings may need to be relocated before construction can begin. But generally speaking, the installation process involves excavating soil from the area where the patio is located and laying down a base layer of sand or crushed stone before installing the pavers or stones you’ve chosen. Once laid in place correctly, securing the stones or pavers with mortar, stone dust or adhesive is next. Keep in mind that settling will occur after this step, as the ground beneath the paver expands and shrinks depending on temperature and / or water content of the soil beneath the pavers. If this occurs, any gaps will be filled with sand or gravel if necessary.

Patio Design and Installation FAQs

What are some things to consider when designing a patio?

When it comes to patio design, there are a lot of aspects to consider. First, you’ll want to think about size: how much space do you have available and is this enough for the patio furniture and accessories you’d like to include? In addition, patio flooring materials should be chosen with long-term durability and weather resistance in mind. Finally, determine your patio style. Are you looking for something open and airy or private and cozy? Start with these basics then carefully pick out patio furniture, textiles and accessories that fit your taste and convey the patio personality you desire.

What is the process for patio design and installation?

Designing and installing a patio can be an enjoyable process that yields long-lasting results. Researching patio materials and designs is the first step to creating a patio oasis of your own. After gathering inspiration online or in magazines, consult with a patio design professional about what materials are best for your patio’s location since patio construction requires extensive knowledge of landscaping practices. Choosing patio furniture, styling features, and conducting measurements are some of the steps needed to create an outdoor area that is perfect for relaxation. Lastly, during the installation phase of patio construction, it’s important to make sure that any grading, paving and stonework such as fire pits or walled structures is properly taken care of for a patio that will last for years to come.

What are some of the factors that can affect the cost of patio installation?

Patio installation varies, depending on several factors. One of the most significant is the actual patio design – the complexity of your design; the materials you chose to implement; and if you are adding other hardscaping features such as a fire pit or a water feature. The size of the patio area and any necessary grading work will also affect the final costs. Landscaping elements, such as plant borders, steps or decks for access to the patio may further increase the expense. Additionally, if your space requires specialized tools and knowledge for construction, there could be extra fees for these specialized services. Because of all these various components, it’s essential to consider all pricing factors beforehand so you know what to expect when planning your patio project.
