How Long Does Quality Paving Stone Installation Take?

Feb 8, 2021

Thinking about investing in paving stone installation, but not sure how long the process takes? Read on to learn what goes into paving stone installation, and how long the install could take.

Paving stone installation is the perfect landscape design project to increase property value and enhance your home’s beauty.

Paving stones are generally used to create a backyard patio, walkway, driveway, or pool deck and are known for their durability – some pavers can last over 100 years! Additionally, pavers adapt well in diverse climates and stand up well during the harsh New England winters, rainy spring season, and hot and humid summer weather.

Whether you live on the coast in Weymouth or Downtown Boston, paving stones will stand up to the elements and the test of time, but what many homeowners are asking landscape contractors on the South Shore is just how long does paving stone installation take?

How Long Does Paving Stone Installation Take?

Paving stone installation is a relatively low-maintenance process. However, the length of time it takes to complete the installation depends on various factors.

Project Scope/Complexity

How big is the installation area? Is your driveway long or short? How wide will the walkway be, or how big is your pool deck?

The paving stone installation area’s size is a major factor in the time it takes to complete the installation. If you are having pavers installed on a small patio, installation may take only one day. However, if the area is much larger, or paving stone installation occurs in multiple parts of your landscape design, installation may take several days to complete.

Paver Material/Pattern

The type of stone you choose and the pattern in which they are installed will impact the length of time it takes to complete the paving stone installation.

If the paving stones are installed in a complex pattern, this will certainly require extra detail on your landscape contractor’s part, adding to the overall time it takes to install the pavers.

Weather

New England is known for weather that can change without warning, leading to unexpected hiccups in our days. The same is true during a landscape design project.

While landscape contractors do their best to complete an installation as quickly and effectively as possible, the weather happens. If the snow begins to fall or rainfall becomes heavy, the installation team may need to reschedule the installation or delay the project until the weather clears.

Existing base material

Before your landscape contractor schedules the paving stone installation, they survey the area to review conditions. If your contractor notices sinking or settling in the installation area, the existing base needs to be removed to make way for a new base.

Additionally, if your existing driveway, walkway, or patio is made from asphalt and is cracking, the asphalt may need to be pulled up and compact the existing base.

How Much Does Paving Stone Installation Cost?

The cost of paving stone installation also depends on the scope of a project and the type of paver you choose.

Patio paver installation can cost anywhere from $12-$20+ based on material and patio access, and depending on the size of your patio.

The most common types of pavers are flagstone and fieldstone, both of which are more expensive than brick or concrete. However, this type of patio paver option is not recommended for landscape design projects in heavily trafficked areas like a driveway or, you guessed it, patio.

Brick and concrete pavers are a more affordable option and provide a diverse design aesthetic. This durable, stain-resistant patio paver option can keep your project under budget and is a better fit for patio paver projects.
