Lawn Care Tips for Healthy & Lush Landscape Design
- Grass does not flourish in the shade, and proper sunlight is needed. It is recommended that grass receive at least 6 hours of sunshine daily to keep your lawn healthy.
- Watering your lawn is another step that many Massachusetts homeowners miss, often depending on rainfall to water the grass for them. However, as the recent drought has taught us, rain cannot always be relied on. The great news is that you do not need to water your lawn every day. In fact, it is recommended that a lawn be watered three times a week, either in the early morning or right before dusk.
- Using the correct amount of fertilizer and lime treatments are also necessary to keep your lawn lush and healthy.
Common Lawn Care Mistakes
Often, homeowners make the mistake of cutting their lawn too short. Make sure to cut the grass no shorter than 3” tall in the summer to prevent soil from drying out and weeds germinating.
Another good tip is to check if your mower blades are sharp. You wouldn’t want your barber cutting your hair or shaving your beard with dull blades, so do not cut grass with dull blades either.
As you enjoy your new lawn, be aware that foot traffic compacts the soil, preventing oxygen from reaching the root system. Try to limit activity on the parts of the grass you want to look the best.
For a healthy, beautiful lawn, remember to:
- Make sure the lawn gets at least 6 hours of sunlight.
- Deep watering three times a week.
- Appropriate Fertilizations and lime treatments.
- Do not cut your grass too short – no shorter than three inches.
- Make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp.
